BAM Construction work with Roché Awnings at Aintree University Hospital, Liverpool

Established in 1898, Aintree University Hospital is located in the heart of Liverpool and provides acute health care to 330,000 residents annually. As a teaching hospital, it works in partnership with multiple organisations, providing community based services and specialist care to the population of Merseyside, Cheshire, South Lancashire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.

BAM Construction UK were asked to organise the refurb of the Trusts Critical Care Unit, to include the installation of specially designed awnings to shelter visitors, patients and staff. They approached Roché Awnings to help with the design and installation of Markilux shading systems to help breathe new life in to the Trust’s outdoor area, and provide a special place for people to get outside the hospital whilst not completely leaving the ward.

Jade Smithson Trainee Site Manager at BAM Construction UK said, “The size and design of the canopies has meant that patients in wheelchairs or beds finally have a comfortable area outside to visit.”

Roché advised the Trust on using the Markilux Syncra 2 Uno Flex frame system in combination with Markilux 6000 patio awnings. This meant that the patio awnings could be mounted on a freestanding Syncra frame, and cover the desired width and projection needed to shelter the balcony area. The Markilux Syncra’s two weighted boxes were cleverly used to stabilise the frame while also acting as flower boxes, creating a unique addition suitable for the modern aesthetic of the hospital building. They also chose a classic grey fabric, manufactured to withstand annual changes in temperature, along with the other challenges posed by life outdoors.

Rob Bond Commercial Sales Manager at Roche Systems said, “We are delighted with the end result and were pleased to be able to help BAM construction deliver such a fantastic upgrade to the hospital. From initial planning, through quotation, to delivery and installation, the project was incredibly well managed and ensured a cost effective, efficient solution.”

The result is a completely rejuvenated outdoor area where critically ill patients can escape the indoors. The Trust continue to get excellent feedback from patients and visitors, with comments on it’s ease of use as well as it’s pleasing aesthetic.
