Fatberg warning for Leisure Industry

A fatberg is a congealed lump of fat, sanitary items and wet wipes that are disposed of down drains and cost UK water companies and businesses millions of pounds each year to clear. 

Many holiday home, camping and caravanning sites have seen hefty repair bills over the summer when the demand on drainage systems are at their maximum. The combination of onsite kitchen waste water, toilets being used as bins and the grease from BBQ's being washed into drains can create the perfect storm. 

Fatbergs can be equally damaging for sites both on and off mains drainage. A recent incident at a site in Cumbria over a bank holiday weekend saw the sites toilets, sinks and showers back up due to a collection of nappies, wet wipes and cooking fat that had solidified sites drainage system. The site owner remarked "when our sewage pump station failed at one of our sites on a busy weekend, we needed to fix the problem quickly. The Serious team arrived really quickly and sorted the problem, which meant no disruption for our customers". 

How can sites prevent fatbergs disrupting your business? 

Proactive maintenance - a frequent visit to check and jet drains, desludge septic tanks or service sewage treatment plants or pump stations is normally much cheaper in the long run 

Education - clear signage in toilet blocks, washing up facilities and around chemical disposal points can help to minimise issues 

Effective grease management - if you have a commercial kitchen onsite, look into installing a grease trap to remove fat from waste water before it leaves the kitchen
