MOOR LODGE CARAVAN PARK TO RELY SOLELY ON GREEN ENERGY
Moor Lodge Caravan Park, located near Wetherby, has claimed it’s the only UK park business generating 100% of its own power!
The park uses green energy produced by woodchips from sustainable forest timber to power and run all of their electrical items which include kettles, refrigerators and even lighting.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, any electricity that isn’t used by their gasification boiler is fed directly back into the national grid, so nothing is wasted.
The park is family run, and has been owned by the same family for over 60 years. It provides just over 70 privately owned holiday homes and touring pitches, all situated within 30 acres of grounds including some areas of ancient woodland.
The park is now under the stewardship of third-generation director, James Brown, and he says that his family have always looked for ways to protect the natural and illustrious countryside where the Moor Lodge resides.
“Maintaining a business which does little to damage our beautiful and natural environment is always a top priority. We want to make sure the animal and plant life here continues to thrive” said James.
“Our new boiler ensures that our park leaves virtually no carbon footprint, and on top of that, it produces enough extra clean energy which can be exported into the UK’s national electricity supplies.
“Our lodge constantly attracts many holiday home buyers and touring guests who show a clear appreciation for preserving the natural world. Once they see what we have achieved, they are as equally blown away and excited as we are.
“It has always been our goal to use goods and service suppliers from within the region as much as we possibly can, which is why we were also delighted to be able to find a local source for our woodchips.
“This really is a win-win situation all round for everyone involved!” James said in his final comment.
Moor Lodge is also self-sustaining with heat demand; this is because their boiler system possesses an additional function which supplies heat for the Lodge’s hot water and central heating.
The park had to invest £400,000 in the system… this may seem extortionate, but James assures us that, over time, this cost will probably be offset from the government’s renewable heat incentive payments.
The park is already planning some more developments. They are looking to develop some luxury holiday lodges to sell, which will all be fitted with eco-friendly features to reduce their energy usage.
