£80M GOLF RESORT PROJECT COULD INCLUDE UNIQUE BOUTIQUE HOTEL

A planning application has been submitted this week to develop a 32 bedroom hotel overlooking the site's walled garden.

If approved, Ury House would become the center of the Aberdeenshire golf resort, which also hopes to feature a course designed by the legendary US golfer Jack Nicklaus.

Nevertheless, previous attempts to convert the grade B listed building into a 35-bedroom hotel in the past were refused due to the building’s proximity to the North Sea Forties underground oil pipeline.

The proximity to this pipeline was deemed as too hazardous by the Health & Safety Executive, who identified that more than 10 overnight guests would be unviable.

The council ended up granting permission to convert the building into a five bedroom hotel, but to be able to make the project commercially sustainable developers have expressed their need to include a higher number of rooms.

FM Group Director Jonathon Milne highlighted the importance of acquiring approval for the new plans, adding: “We really need to get the extra rooms to make the whole development viable. If they get the go ahead, we can start building the golf course and finishing off the hotel and spa. It would mean we could still aim to have the resort open by 2020.”

“The castle itself is now wind and watertight, and we want to get in a fit it out. The walled garden rooms will really pull the whole development together and it in no way affects the pipeline.”

Other plans for the resort include an equestrian centre and a spa, which would turn the site into a must-visit tourism destination.
