£200M HOYLAKE GOLF RESORT PLANS STEAM AHEAD

Councillors have approved the commencement of preliminary site investigations in order to allow developers to prepare for the submission of the full planning application later in the year.

If approved, the resort will include a luxurious 5* hotel with a health club and spa, as well as the two focal golf courses, one of which will be an 18-hole championship course designed by renowned American golf champion Jack Nicklaus.

The site chosen for the development lies opposite the popular Royal Liverpool Golf Club, which has hosted the Open Championship 12 times so far, the last of which was back in 2014.

Support from the council this early on forecasts a promising result for the development, yet the project’s plans have drawn criticism from the public.

Nevertheless, the local council believes it will be a positive addition to the region, with the Head of the local council - Councillor Davies - describing it as “a flagship development which will create hundreds of jobs for local people and support businesses across the borough.”

He added: “As a globally-significant tourism and leisure attraction, it will support growth in our vibrant tourism economy and attract thousands of additional visitors to the Wirral every year.”

“Hoylake Golf Resort will be a key leisure destination with a high-end hotel, restaurants, spa and conference facilities.”

“It will prove to be an attractive offer for international conferences and similar events.”

The Stop Hoylake Golf Resort Action Group disagrees, stating: “We are against development on Green Belt Land, which is totally against current planning policy.”

“Building on a flood plain will increase Flood Risk in the Birket Valley.”

“We are also concerned about the environmental Damage to biodiverse farmland which is home to a wide variety of species, many of them nationally and internationally protected.”
