PLANS TO BUILD MAJOR CARAVAN PARK ON THIRLESTANE CASTLE GROUNDS REVEALED

Lauderdale Estates hope to set up 500 static caravans and an additional 50 touring caravan pitches on the site, as well as build a dedicated entrance through the castle itself.

The scale of the major tourism development planned for the grounds of the 14th Century castle will depend on the outcome of the public consultation process and site credentials.

Back in the 14th Century, a Border fort was built on the site to protect the region from any Southern attacks directed towards Edinburgh due to its strategic location.

At 52.6 hectares, the large plot of land is currently used for forestry and agricultural purposes. Developers will first evaluate the site’s cultural heritage, landscape, flood-risk, transport and ecology in order to better inform their prospective planning application.

The preliminary report stated: “This is a major development of a proposed caravan park with associated engineering, infrastructure and drainage works, access arrangements, including new access from the A68, open spaces, landscaping and woodland management.”

Plans for the entrance hub include a shop, a cafe and a caravan sales centre.
