£3.5M BIRCHWOOD LAKES ECO-TOURISM RESORT TO OPEN IN 2020

Habitat First Group’s multi-million eco-tourism project was approved by the North Devon Council last April, and the swift progress on its construction means the first accommodation units could go on sale early next year.

The site has planning permission in place for 158 holiday units and a 40-bedroom hotel, and further plans also include the development of a country club with leisure facilities and a spa.

Once completed, the ambitious holiday park will generate an estimated £3.9m to the local economy every year according to developers Habitat First Group. The aim is to transform the former quarry into a ‘sustainable eco-tourism development’, by investing in renewable energy solutions, installing facilities for the harvesting and reuse of water, and implementing other eco-friendly alternatives for the running of the park.

Habitat First Group’s Managing Director, Will Vicary, said: “We have listened to and worked extensively with the local community to develop our proposals up until this stage. It is vital that we have the buy in from all parties involved to help us see through our vision; transforming what was once a derelict quarry into a world-class conservation community.’

“Once the detailed design has been permitted, we hope to begin construction in 2019 and for the site to be operational in 2020. We estimate that Birchwood Lakes will create approximately 100 jobs and pump over £3.9 million into the local economy each year, bringing huge benefits to the entire county.”
